Magick from the Far East: Setting up a Zen Altar with Mathew
Join us Saturday July 22nd @ 11:30am PST / 2:30pm EST for Magick from the Far East: Japanese Shinto Practice for Spiritual Inspiration with Mathew
Across the world, animism is a concept that shows up in many forms. Through a lot of the flourishing superstition, which is not necessarily always showing up in a way of being cautious of things, Japan has created many unique rituals, sacred sites, and relationships with local spirits of place. Shintoism has been one of the most prolific spiritual ways in the country and is very much involving people who simply “go to church” like in the States, just for the cultural correlation. Many in Japan are not necessarily religious but go to the shrines as it is also a cultural experience for them. Let us see how we can take inspiration from these ways to inform our own practices!
Join me for an exciting class on a basic history, a snapshot of practice, and a wonderful multi-part dive into Eastern Magick and the systems that belong to it.

Mathew Skurat
Mathew Skurat is a Victorian-era-inspired Psychic Medium and Eclectic Witch based in the Southern Illinois Area. His interests root in this very special era that was steeped in Spiritualism and built ongoing relationship with spirit vs. one-night investigation. Although one-night investigations do occur, Mathew recognizes the great importance placed on building ongoing relationship with spirit. The name “The Mistery” came partly out of his love of the mysterious and arcane, and also a pun, him being Mister Y in some way or another, or Mr.y for short.
Because of this proclivity to the Victorian era, Mathew collects many 1800s antiques, some with spirit and some simply with storied history. He loves to cater for people, as the Victorians did, and he loves to conduct safe and sweet séances that connect people with their loved ones on the other side in detailed connected ways.
Since he was young, he has always experienced spirit closely, but it was swiftly taught out of him at this young age. As soon as he hit college on one of the most haunted and oldest campuses in Illinois, his gift opened back up in a large way. His clairvoyance bloomed to where he was seeing more detail than he could handle at the time, but he has since trained it over the last six years of practice. He has explored all over his college campus and had seen its stories come to life in front of him, stayed the night alone in the Lemp Mansion, and had many other adventures with more to come.
Most recently, and in the last year, he has worked with Psychic Medium and Good Witch of Hollywood Patti Negri (notably known for her recurring role on Travel Channel and Discovery+’s “Ghost Adventures”), amongst other great colleagues and mentors, to gain more knowledge and certification in mediumship and many other occult topics. In the last year he has been certified by Patti in séance, tarot, mediumship, and also an advanced certification in mediumship.
In his mediumship work, Mathew enjoys helping and connecting, empowering and providing spiritual services for his clients and students. He can be found doing one on one mediumship, cartomancy, charm throwing, spiritual guidance, and house cleansings/blessings, alongside traveling and providing these services at psychic festivals, spiritual events, and metaphysical/paranormal conventions. He also enjoys larger group and intimate séance, mediumship walkthroughs of haunted locations with and without other investigators, and gallery readings at events.
